WAYS TO REDUCE AND PREVENT BAD BREATH
We all remember that one friend whose breath lingers, long after they leave the room. The last thing we want is the tables to turn, and for it to be us.
Don’t worry, it's relatively easy to prevent bad breath, or to at least improve your breath before your next routine dental check-up in Perth. It is important to keep your teeth and gums healthy; dental cavities, gum disease, poor oral hygiene, coated tongue are among the most common origins for bad breath.
As bad breath is not a dental emergency, we have devised 5 tips to negate bad breath, before you see us for your routine check-up.
1. You can’t avoid the classics - brush and floss regularly!
Your Perth dentist would have told you to keep to a regular daily dental regime. This includes, brushing twice a day, and flossing at least once a day. If you don’t do this, plaque (which really is a sticky mass of bacteria and their poop) on and between your teeth which can cause bad breath. There is also the classic case of food being trapped in between your teeth and under your gums – especially if you suffer from gum disease. If you're concerned about your breath, come and see us. Remember, proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth, helping to control bad breath.
2. Be sure to clean your tongue
Cleaning your tongue regularly can be the biggest influencer in your breath. If you didn’t already know, the coating that normally forms on your tongue can be a host for pungent bacteria. To get rid of these bacteria, gently brush your tongue, with your toothbrush or with the use of a tongue cleaner scraping tool. Ask us about this, we can provide you with advice.
3. Avoid dry mouth and drink lots of water
Apart from ensuring you drink plenty of water daily, it is recommended that you avoid tobacco, alcohol and soft drink. Keep your mouth moist, which can be also achieved by sugar free chewing gum. For chronic dry mouth, your Perth dentist may prescribe an oral medication that stimulates the flow of saliva.
